Your First Week With a Resin Printer: Leveling, Exposure Tests and Common Failures

Spend day one on the workspace, not the printer: ventilation, nitrile gloves, eye protection, a silicone mat, and a lidded tub for waste that will cure in daylight. Then level the plate, run a small exposure test starting from the numbers on the resin bottle, and only then print something you care about. Elegoo publishes 60 s bottom and 8 s normal exposure for Standard Resin and as little as 0.5 to 1.8 s for Rapid Standard, so the profile is resin-specific, not printer-specific. Nearly every first-week failure traces back to leveling, exposure, film condition or orientation, in that order.
Day 1: build the workspace before you open the bottle
Set up somewhere with real airflow: RadTech advises operating printers and open vats in a well-ventilated area or with local exhaust, and the University of Tennessee EHS guidance uses four air changes per hour as a floor. Put down a silicone mat ($14.99 for two here), keep nitrile gloves and splash goggles within reach, and designate a clear tub in daylight where contaminated paper towel goes to cure before disposal.
Then do the boring checks: shake the resin bottle well, and get the room to the temperature the resin wants. Elegoo's Standard Resin listing specifies a recommended temperature of 20 to 25 degrees C. Cold resin is thick resin, and thick resin causes exactly the peel and adhesion failures you will otherwise blame on the printer.
Leveling: the ten minutes that prevent a week of failures
Newer machines in this line automate it. The Mars 5, Mars 5 Ultra and Saturn 4 family advertise self-check and auto-leveling, and the Mars 4 Ultra and Saturn 3 Ultra use a four-point system that Elegoo says does not need repeating after the first successful level. Automation does not excuse the preparation.
Clean the build plate and the screen glass first: Elegoo's own leveling guidance for the Saturn 4 Ultra starts from a plate free of residual resin and dust, since a cured crumb under the plate levels the printer to the crumb. Remove the vat before leveling, loosen the plate, let it sit flat on the screen, and tighten. If you are checking manually, the standard test is a sheet of paper at each of the four corners: it should drag with equal resistance everywhere, and corners where it slides free are the ones to adjust with the supplied hex key.
Start from the manufacturer's published numbers, not from a stranger's profile. Elegoo lists 60 s bottom / 8 s normal for Standard Resin, 20 to 60 s bottom / 1.5 to 15 s normal for Plant-Based, and exposure as short as 0.5 to 1.8 s for Rapid Standard. Darker pigments and colder rooms both push the number up.
Then print a calibration part rather than a cube. The AmeraLabs Town is the widely used one: it combines a checkerboard of 1.0 mm cutouts, slots from 0.1 to 1.0 mm, fine pillars, cross-shaped bridges and stepped recesses, so a single small print tells you which way to move. Their reading rules are simple: checkerboard gaps too narrow or openings closed means decrease exposure; gaps too wide or pillars too thin means increase it. Change one variable at a time, in small steps, and reprint.

The habit that prevents most of these: after any failed print, strain the entire vat through a filter or funnel before printing again. A single cured fragment left in the vat will be pressed into the film by the plate and puncture it, which turns a failed print into a resin spill.
Do not let unwashed prints pile up. Lift the model off the plate with gloves on, wash it, cure it, then clean the plate and the tools before the resin on them cures onto anything. Every station in this catalog has a 0 to 30 minute timer; small parts need a fraction of that, and the useful test after curing is tactile, a hard surface with no tack.
Two habits worth forming immediately. Keep the vat covered when the printer is idle, since light and heat drive polymerisation, and pour unused resin back into the bottle through a filter rather than leaving it in the vat for weeks. And treat the used wash liquid as waste from the start: let it settle, decant the clear liquid, cure the sludge in daylight, and dispose of it solid. Nothing goes down a drain, including water-washable rinse water.

My first print stuck to the film instead of the plate. What is wrong?
Almost always leveling or bottom exposure. Re-level with a clean, dry plate and no vat in place, then increase the bottom exposure time and the number of bottom layers. Elegoo's published bottom exposure for Standard Resin is 60 seconds against 8 seconds for normal layers, so bottom layers are meant to be dramatically longer.
Do I need to re-level after every print?
No. Elegoo states that its four-point systems do not need re-leveling after a successful level, and the newer machines self-check. Re-level after you replace the film or vat, after moving the printer, or after a crash where the plate hit something.
How do I know when a print is cured enough?
The surface should be hard and completely free of tack. Under-cured prints stay slightly sticky, which means uncured resin is still on the surface and it is still a skin-contact hazard. Rotate the part and re-cure any face that sat flat on the turntable.
Can I reuse the resin left in the vat?
Yes, if you filter it. Pour it back into the bottle through a fine filter or strainer to catch cured fragments, and keep the vat covered while it is idle. Unfiltered resin is how release films get punctured.
What is the single most common beginner mistake?
